Before you pick up the remote
- A Fire TV Stick or Fire TV of any generation, with a 4K model for the main television
- The SWIVTV login, left in your WhatsApp chat where it arrived: server URL with its port, username, password
- Their Wi-Fi name and password, or an Ethernet adapter if the router is close to the TV
- A free HDMI port on the TV and a wall outlet for the stick's own power adapter
- The channels they watch now, asked for on the phone before you go
- Roughly 10 Mbps reaching the stick for HD, and a steady 25 Mbps for 4K

The install, in one sitting
Pick the player your dad will live with
Decide this before touching the stick, and decide it for the person watching. IPTV Smarters Pro is free and opens on a few large tiles, Live TV among them, which suits someone who goes straight to the same handful of channels. TiViMate is built around a channel grid, so it feels closest to the set-top box many people grew up with. Its free version is enough to begin. Premium is a purchase made on a phone, in the TiViMate Companion app, costing about $9.99 a year or a lifetime license somewhere in the mid-$30s paid once, with a 7-day trial; it adds recording, multi-view and multiple playlists. Both players take the same login, so a change of mind later costs one more visit.
Allow one app from beyond Amazon's store
A new stick refuses anything Amazon did not supply. Go into Settings and pick My Fire TV. If Developer Options is listed there, open it and turn Apps from Unknown Sources on. On recent Fire OS versions that switch stays hidden until some app requests it, so if it is missing, skip the search. The same permission surfaces as Install unknown apps, against Downloader, the moment Downloader needs it.
Install Downloader and give it storage access
Search the home screen for Downloader and take the one with the orange icon from AFTVnews. Open it straight away. The first thing it does is request storage access, and if that request is refused, the download in the next step seems to finish and then nothing at all happens.
Fetch the player
Highlight the address box in Downloader and enter the short link that came with your login, or the official address of the player's APK. Downloader does not autocorrect, so read the address back before you press Go; if it reports a failed download, a typo or a permission granted to the wrong app is almost always why, and support can send a mirror link. Once the file is down, the installer pops up on its own. Install, then Done, and let Downloader delete the fetched file afterwards; the app stays installed.
Sign in with the Xtream Codes details
Sideloaded apps land in Your Apps and Channels, not on the front row, so scroll down for the new tile. Smarters shows its terms first; agree, and the login type you want is Login with Xtream Codes API. TiViMate starts with Add playlist, where you pick Xtream Codes login. Any profile name will do. Then the three values from your chat: the username, the password, and the server URL, which begins with http:// and carries its port after the colon, in the form http://server:8080. In Smarters the button to confirm is Add User. Let the first load of channels and guide data run to the end.
Move the player to the front of the app row
This is the first hand-over step and the one that prevents the most phone calls. A Fire TV comes back from a restart on Amazon's home screen with its rows of suggestions, not inside the player, so the player should sit one press away from there. Open the full list of apps, highlight the player, press the menu button with three short lines and use the option to move it, then set it first. After that, the house button and one click are the entire route to their channels.
Put their channels in one short list
Use the list you asked for before the visit, in their own words: the news they have on at six, the quiz channel, the sports network he never misses. Press and hold select on a channel and Smarters files it under Favorites. TiViMate does the same from the options a long press brings up. Keep the list short enough to read without scrolling. TiViMate can also hide whole groups from its playlist settings, so a wrong turn lands among familiar names.
Set the picture before anyone judges it
Open the player's settings and set the decoder to hardware; Smarters keeps it under Player settings. On a stick, that one choice removes most of the stutter people blame on the service. Then play three of his channels for a minute each, including the one he cares about most, and check the sound comes out of whatever speaker or soundbar the TV normally uses.
Teach the four buttons that matter
Most of the Fire TV remote can be ignored. The ring moves and its center selects. The back arrow undoes one step. The house button returns to the home screen, where the player now sits first. The play and pause button holds a movie while the kettle boils. If the remote has power and volume buttons, let the stick's setup link them to the TV, so one remote runs the evening. Many televisions also wake and switch to the stick when its remote is pressed, a feature each maker names differently; test it rather than promise it.
Write the if-it-stops card, leaving the password off
Three lines on a card, propped next to the TV. One: pull the stick's power plug, count to ten, plug it back in, wait for the home screen, choose the first tile. Two: if that fails, look at the router, and if its lights look wrong, unplug it, plug it back in and give it five minutes. Three: message SWIVTV support on WhatsApp with a photo of the screen; they will talk to your dad directly. The login stays off the card, in your WhatsApp chat, exactly where it arrived.
Hand over the remote and watch once
Switch everything off, give your dad the remote and sit on your hands. Ask him to turn the TV on, open the player, find one of his channels, change to another, and get back after pressing the house button by mistake. Where he hesitates, note the spot, fix it (usually the tile position or a group left visible) and run it again. You are finished when he does the whole route twice without looking at you.
The snags, and how to clear them
The TV says No signal instead of showing the player
The television is on another input, usually because someone pressed Source or Input, or it switched back to the antenna. That button on the TV remote steps through the inputs until the stick's HDMI input appears; write its number on the card. From your own home you can talk him through it on a video call, with his phone pointed at the screen while you say which button to press.
Channels play but the guide rows are empty
Guide data comes with the login, and on a fresh install it can take until the next day to fill every row. After that, ask the player to refresh its guide from its settings. If the rows for his channels stay blank, message support on WhatsApp with those channel names; the guide comes from the SWIVTV server, so it is for support to fix, not for him.
The player is asking for a username and password again
Some app updates do this, and so can a stick clearing space. The account is fine. Enter the three values on a video call: he holds the phone so you can see the screen, and you read each field out of your WhatsApp chat while he types, or you do it on the next visit. If correct details are refused, compare today with the renewal date you noted, then message support.
It stops and spins in the evening but is fine in the afternoon
Begin with the free fix, hardware decoding, if it was not set during the visit. Then distance: a stick behind a TV two rooms and a staircase away from the router struggles, and an Ethernet adapter ends it. Where the internet provider slows streaming at peak times, a VPN connected to a server close by can help. If it carries on, message support with the channel and the time.
Every channel stopped on the same day
Look at the calendar before anything else. Nothing renews on its own, so a plan simply ends on its date, and the renewal date you wrote down when you paid is the first thing to check. Renewing is a WhatsApp message from your own phone. If the date is not the problem, message support; they can see whether the account and the server are both healthy.

Have the login in your WhatsApp first
It arrives under 15 minutes after you pay, so the whole install fits in one sitting. A month costs $15 and a full year $69, with all 25,000+ channels either way.
Firestick: quick answers
Which Fire TV Stick should I buy for my parents?
A 4K model for the television they watch most, because the Lite stops at 1080p and never shows the 4K feeds a plan includes. Expect roughly $30 to $50, and Amazon discounts them often. The remotes differ a little between models, but all share the ring, select, back and home layout, which is the part your parents will handle every night.
Can I pay for their plan from my own phone?
Yes. Order on WhatsApp from your phone, pay there, and the login arrives in your chat, ready for you to put on their stick. Nothing renews on its own, so put the end date in your calendar with a reminder a week before. If your parents live in a separate home, their TV has its own plan: one account covers one household, as the terms say.
Can the same login run on two sticks in their house?
Yes, within the one household. Installs are not counted; what the plan caps is the number of streams playing together. With a single stream, the bedroom stick and the living room stick can both stay signed in while only one plays. If both will be on together, the two-stream plan costs $25 for a month or $119 for a year.
Will the stick open the IPTV player by itself when the TV comes on?
Plan on one press rather than none. After a restart a Fire TV returns to Amazon's home screen, so the dependable arrangement is the player moved to the first position in the app row: house button, then select, and the channels are there. That route survives app updates and power cuts, which is why it is the one worth teaching.
