The install, in one sitting
Choose the route by how he uses the computer
If he uses the computer every day and is comfortable double-clicking icons, the IPTV Smarters desktop app is the closest thing to a television: live channels, a guide and the film library, behind the Xtream login. If the computer is shared or locked down and you would rather install nothing, the browser player needs only a bookmark. VLC with the M3U link is best kept for you: it is fine for testing, but a long playlist with no guide is not a friendly way to spend an evening.
Route one: install IPTV Smarters Pro
From the IPTV Smarters website, download the installer that matches his system (there is one for Windows and one for macOS), run it, and open the app. A Mac can also take IPTV Smarters Player from the Mac App Store. Choose Login with Xtream Codes API, then paste the three values from your WhatsApp chat: username, password and the server address, which keeps its http:// and its port. Pasting beats typing here, because a trailing space or a missing colon is invisible until the login fails.
Route two: the browser player

Route three: VLC and the M3U link, for testing
In VLC, Ctrl+N brings up the network stream box (Cmd+N does it on a Mac), the keyboard route to Media, then Open Network Stream. The M3U link goes in that box; Play starts it. To see the channels in their groups instead of one endless column, bring up the playlist pane with Ctrl+L. Confirm a channel plays, then close VLC again.
Give the player one plain icon
Put a single shortcut on the desktop, or keep the app in the Dock on a Mac, and rename it to something he would say out loud, such as Television or News. Remove any second shortcut you created while testing, so there is only one thing to click. Both Windows and macOS can also open a program automatically when the user signs in; add the player to that list and the computer greets him with it already open.
Set up his favorites and the full-screen habit
Mark the channels he watches as favorites in the player, most-watched first. Then show him how to fill the screen and how to get back: in VLC, the F key toggles full screen and Esc leaves it; in a browser on Windows, F11 does the same; on a Mac, the green button in the window's corner. In most players, a double-click on the picture toggles full screen as well; try it together.
Check sleep, sound and the charger
Play a channel for twenty minutes during the visit and watch whether the screen dims or the laptop goes to sleep. If it does, lengthen the sleep timer in the power settings. Check the volume is comfortable from where he sits, and whether a small speaker would help. Leave a laptop on its charger for the evening, since a dead battery ends a program sooner than any network fault.
If the picture should go on the television
An HDMI cable from the computer to the TV shows the same picture on the big screen, with the computer used as the remote. Tape a short card beside the screen
Three lines on a card or sticky note near the screen. First: restart the computer, from the Start menu on Windows or the Apple menu on a Mac, then open the Television icon. Let him start an evening from a closed laptop

VLC lists the channels but none of them start

If a single channel stays silent, its HD or SD twin usually plays. If nothing plays at all, compare today with the renewal date, and then write to support.
The browser player shows its sign-in page again
Clearing the browser's history, or a browser update, can sign the page out. The account is fine. Sign in once more when you are next there, or talk him through it by video, his phone leaning against the screen while you read out one value at a time. A refused sign-in is a question for support.
The screen goes dark in the middle of a program
That is the computer's power setting, not the stream. Lengthen the time before the screen turns off, or before the computer sleeps, and keep a laptop plugged in. If the dark screen comes with an error message in the player, send support a photo of it.
After an update the player is not on the screen
Windows and macOS sometimes restart overnight to install updates, and anything that was open closes. If you added the player to the programs that open at sign-in, it comes back by itself; if not, the desktop icon brings it back with a double-click. Put that sentence on the card.
Channels stall in the evening on Wi-Fi
A laptop on the far side of the home from the router is the usual reason. A network cable, with a small USB adapter if the laptop has no Ethernet port, settles it. If the stalls continue on a cable, tell support which channel it was and roughly when; they can look at that feed from their side.
